The Opatha police have commenced an investigation to arrest a charmer (Kapua) who allegedly raped a twelve-year-old minor girl at a house in Opatha, Galle while performing a Pooja for 8 days.

Police said that a woman had brought the suspect charmer to her house to remove an alleged curse on her husband. The custodian had reportedly performed a ritual on her husband.

The charmer who saw the girl in the house, told the residents that he could invoke a divine blessing upon their daughter after performing the Pooja for eight days and the parents then gave their consent to do so.

According to the police, the Kapuwa spent time with the girl in a room of the house and on the night of the final day, he told everyone except the girl to leave the house until he calls them to get back. The parents had consented.

It was reported that when the power cut was imposed in the area, the suspect raped the girl and threatened her with a knife not to tell anyone about it, and that she and her family members would be killed if she discloses it to anyone.

However, the girl reportedly informed her aunt about the incident who later complained to the police.

The girl was presented to the Judicial Medical Officer of the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital and the doctor who examined her submitted the medical report stating that she had been raped.

Police investigations are underway to arrest the suspect.

Meanwhile, Senior DIG Ajith Rohana told the Daily Mirror that the life of an innocent girl had been destroyed by following superstitious belief and appealed to the people not to fall prey to such fraudsters. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

As you can see, many of these unfortunate incidents happen due to the ignorance and foolishness of parents/elders. Didn't they have an iota of knowledge of what he was up to when he asked everyone to leave but the girl? Who would leave a girl at the hands of a stranger? Ultimately, a poor girl had to pay the price, ruining her entire life!

I just can't understand that people believe in astrology and also trust these kapuwas and various persons conducting rituals. Absolute stupidity has ruined the life of a girl.

Incidents like these show the utter ignorance of our fellow Sri Lankans. People believe in devils, angels and gods and this is the primary cause of the dire situation in SL. The more we believe in superstition, the more backward we become.
