President Ranil Wickremesinghe should realize that he can no longer rule the country with a suppressive mindset like in the 1980s and if he resorts to such suppressive moves, it will be a complete failure, National People’s Power (NPP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said today.

He told a news conference that the world and society have now completely changed when compared to the 1980s.

The MP said ordinary people are not responsible for the present situation in the country and that the rulers should accept the blame for the economic failure.

“People have a right to organize themselves and protest against the rulers who are responsible for the economic crime and expel them. The government has no right to stop people’s protests. We will not allow Ranil Wickremesinghe to suppress any protest. We will stand with the people to defeat the President’s suppressive and anti-democratic moves,” he said.

He said the government was setting the ground to prevent a people’s uprising in the near future by suppressing isolated protests organized by the people against its unreasonable and suppressive moves.

He said people have now realized the government’s failed attempt to show that the economy is reviving and that they have started to protest against the government’s destructive moves.

“The recent Central Bank report reveals the true economic situation in the country. The report clearly shows that the economic growth rate has dropped in 2023 when compared to 2022 and the budget deficit has also increased while industries have collapsed resulting in thousands losing their jobs. All sectors such as education and health are in crisis. People are not prepared to endure this situation anymore,” he said.

He said the government has started a witch-hunt for social activists and journalists who speak against the government and reveal the true situation in the country and added that journalist Tharindu Uduwaragedara had been arrested and assaulted.

The MP said Uduwaragedara should be released immediately and police officers who harassed him should be brought to book.(Ajith Siriwardana)

Very true, those police officers, judges and forces who detained abused and prevented peaceful protest should be brought to justice and punished. Srilankan politicians think they can suppress the masses and minorities using forces and rouge judges

One also needs to understand that they cannot rule a country with a subversive mindset like the 80’s

    Premakeerthi Saturday, 29 July 2023 03:19 PM

Rulers and aslo JVP responsible, who jacked up false visionaries like Mahinda promoting that only the war can resolve all political, economic and ethnic issues in a unitary model, creating divisions inside all sectors through strikes and protests since 1980s.

Tissa Fernando Saturday, 29 July 2023 03:22 PM

Mr. AKD, but you are still advocating to 1950 communist theories and 1971 and 1988 1989 type of tactics. Aren't you my friend?

    Lanka Saturday, 29 July 2023 03:23 PM

That is true that politics has changed with the social changes in all walk of life . Politics of past is not to be repeated .. aggressive politics of killing and torturing people will no longer work

    What a broad Chinthanaya.

Karalasingam Sivalingam Saturday, 29 July 2023 03:48 PM

Ranil must handle protesters in an human way. Protests are a message to the government of their suffering, be cautious with protesters, they express real grief of the masses.

    Sheran Saturday, 29 July 2023 03:57 PM

Yes we all remember what happened with the JVP in the 80s. He’s the one to talk!

    Sokrates Saturday, 29 July 2023 04:23 PM

Even if I have reservations about the man and the socialist ideas of his party, he speaks the truth about the economic situation and the repressive and undemocratic style of how Ranil governs the country.

Bernard Jayatilake Saturday, 29 July 2023 04:25 PM

The ordinary people of this country should be held responsible for the current mess of this country as they overwhelmingly elected the former ruler his party and theJVP has to weep for them now as those same people have overwhelmingly joined the JVP as a protest and and not for the organizational power of the party.

Then what did he say! Watch Out

    Well said

Unlike GR days this man now limit only to issue "statements" and condemn the govt by calling press conferences. Power of RW!

Same applies to AKD as well. His mindset was clearly shown when NPP tried to take over the parliament last year by force. Also, the recent rhetorics of Lalkantha urging people to get on to streets shows the same mentality of 1980's. We all know how a mob behave.

Muttiah Paranthaman Sunday, 30 July 2023 07:00 AM

Cannot go on like this with the mindset of unpopular processions and protests along the streets disrupting the day today living of the innocent people. Please stop and try to do something worth to the country. Enough is enough!

    Kunchithapathan Sunday, 30 July 2023 07:12 AM

This government consists of SLPP parliamentarians notorious for corruption and abuse. Country got into economic crisis because of the bad management by there leaders. President Ranil Wickremesinghe had been awarded the presidency on a platter by the Rajapakses when they were in the verge of chased away by the people. Therefore this scenario was a blessings in disguise for Ranil Wickremesinghe and for him any protest march appears to be a threat similar to Aragalaya. So Ranil Wickremesinghe is making use of military power to crush any uprisals. Rajapakses still having strong backing by the military and police. People's power appears to be waning.

Jagath Ekanaya Sunday, 30 July 2023 10:16 AM

At least in 1989 the president had a functional mind unlike today.

Robin Banks Sunday, 30 July 2023 10:20 AM

A leader tlwho is hated by 99.99% of the citizens can only rule by suppression and oppression my friend.

A member of leaderless flock Sunday, 30 July 2023 10:37 AM

RW can rule Sri Lanka as his uncle did in the 1980s albeit now in worse form. There is nothing JVP or any other party can do. SL needs a leader like Mahatma Gandhi who commands the trust and respect of people. At present there is nobody like that.

    Mandayan Sunday, 30 July 2023 12:16 PM

Same mindset towards the minorities since independence brought the country to its kneels.

Change in status of Sinhalese Sunday, 30 July 2023 05:51 PM

Mandayan! Even the ordinary Sinhalese have become minorities, because it is the Parliamentarians who are to be regarded as majority, because they run the nation the way they want.
