The Bribery Commission has informed the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court that it expects to record a statement from former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on July 27 regarding the recovery of Rs. 17.85 million from the President's House on July 9, 2022.

The Bribery Commission had commenced an investigation into this incident following a complaint lodged by the Puravesi Balaya Organisation.

Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage had earlier issued notices on Bribery Commission officials to appear before court to inquire whether a sum of Rs. 17.85 million recovered from the President's House on 9th July, 2022 would come under the offences relating to the Bribery Act.

Meanwhile, in his second statement to the CID regarding the investigations into the recovery of Rs. 17.85 million from the President's House by Aragalaya activists, former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has stated that the cash found inside the President’s Office was given by businessmen attached to the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the money in question was to be distributed among the people whose houses were destroyed by the protesters.

However, the former President had told the CID that he was not in a position to reveal the names of persons who contributed to the funds since the documents pertaining to the financial records had been misplaced following the occupation of the premises by Aragalaya activists.

Meanwhile, the CID submitted to court that the extracts of the investigations are to be sent to the Attorney General to ascertain whether there are any offences committed under the Money Laundering Act. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)

Please don’t waste your time and further public funds on these resultsless investigations. Even the blind knows this is just a show.

We have a fake bribery commission to record a statement from a crook that took place close to 2 years ago.

Defence is worse than the offence. Damage caused to houses and Gota leaving President's house could have been simultaneous or after Gota left. How did he collect the cash in such a hurry to leave it where it was found. Not a good excuse Gota. Please dismiss the lawyer who suggested this defence

    Ram Thursday, 20 July 2023 03:51 AM

I guess BC will be intelligent enough to reject the defence as unacceptable when the time Gota bolted and the damages caused to houses are verified

Holding a big sum of 17.85 million is not a joke. Why the former President held this sum with him even SLPP supporting businessmen given to distribute for the Ministers/MP's who lost their belongings. A big fraud deal had taken place. CID must question Gota and take appropriate action against him.

Gamunu Punchihewa (Gota's Admin Staff) Thursday, 20 July 2023 07:43 AM

Well, 17.85 million Gota had was kept with him to be handed over to Mahinda his brother as he is the one who arranged this bribe from the Leading Businessmen for secret business dealings (for giving Tax relief)

Reminds me of a saying learnt in school: "The man who was caught up in a Kithul tree had an answer ready". For the benefit of those unfamiliar, Kithul trees produce toddy from it's flower.

What a JOKE!!!. Forget the financial records, just give us the name of the businessman, he should also be taken in for questioning. Gota indicates that the businessman gave him the CASH, then he mentions others have contributed too, well the businessman who handed the CASH over to GOTA should be fully aware of who the others (IF ANY) who donated. When was the FIRST statement collected and what was GOTA'S response? also
