The bodies of two children lying near a well in a thick jungle area behind the line houses in St.Joachim estate in Karapinch in Ratnapura had been recovered on Sunday afternoon (19) by Kuruvita police.
The deceased were identified as seven year old Gajendrakumar Sarvanath and one and a half year old Gajendra Kumara Nishad of St.Joachim estate.
The mother of the victims told police that the two children fell into the well in the early hours of Sunday morning and their bodies were taken out and left in the jungle.
However, investigations revealed that the children’s parents had left home following a brawl in the household on Saturday evening (18).
Meanwhile the police said they had interrogated the mother during which she said that she had left home after the brawl and returned in the early hours of Sunday morning (19). In her statement she said that when she returned she found her two children missing. She said they had fallen into the well and after helping them out, she had left them in the jungle.
Later she alleged she had taken an overdose of Panadol and was admitted to hospital.
Police said they suspect the death of the two children was foul play.
A police team under OIC CI Ranjith Minipura is conducting further investigations on the instructions of SP Senaka Weerasinghe.(Ajithlal Shantrha Udaya)
