Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara today said he could not be a part of a government that has pruned ‘powers’ of Provincial Councils and would be compelled to leave the government if any such attempt was made.Speaking at a media conference, Minister Nanayakkara however added that he accepted the fact that the ‘merger’ clause pertaining to Provincial Councils and the ‘absolute majority’ clause vested through the 13th Amendment to the Constitution with regard to laws passed by Parliament and its acceptance by Provincial Councils, should be referred to the Parliamentary Select Committee.
“We have taken an oath to accept the Constitution and although there may be diverse views regarding the 13th Amendment we have to accept it. It is the democratic right of the people to hold such views as the complete repealing of the 13th amendment or curtailing of its powers” he said.
However, answering a question posed by a journalist, the Minister said he could not be part of a government which has curtailed “powers” vested in the Provincial Councils.
“The government is only looking at the merger and the majority clauses and not in the curbing of powers, however if such is done I cannot be part of a government which has done that” he said. (ISA)
