Vasan shoots down MK’s Eelam demand

Union Minister GK Vasan on Tuesday refused to support the demand of its ally, the DMK, for a referendum on a separate Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka and said the Congress was giving priority to rehabilitation and restoration of livelihood for the island Tamils. Evading a direct reply to a question whether the revival of Tamil Eelam Supporters Organisation by the DMK would hit its ties with the Congress, he said the Congress was doing its best for Lankan Tamils and the Centre had already supported UNHRC resolution. We Sri Lankans should help Karunanidhi realize his dream, Tamil Ealam. That is in Tamil Nadu. The homeland of Tamils, where almost all Tamils of the world live.

Can anybody explain why the Tamils in India need a separate state? They already have their own power including land and police power and they live with dignity. They are free to practice their traditions.

Tamils in SL are Sri Lankans and are free to observe their traditions and religious rituals. They own land, homes and businesses in Colombo. What is the need for a separate state?
