Senior DIG Vaas Gunawardena who was admitted to the National Hospital by the CID due to diabetic, hypertension and heart condition was later remanded till June 25 by the Colombo Magistrate today.

CID ASP Shani Abeysekera assisted by IP M. A. Munasinghe, filing a report before the Colombo Additional Magistrate A.M. Shahabdeen submitted that  they had taken into custody seven suspects including DIG Vaas Gunawardena in connection with the killing of millionaire businessman Mohamed Shyam and they were conducting further investigations on the seven suspects who are being held in detention.

He said the CID had sent the productions recovered during the investigation to the Government Analyst for examination and a report.

ASP Abeysekera said that DIG Gunawardena who fell ill was admitted to ward number 42 of the National Hospital. He also said the 90-hour detention order obtained against the suspect was over.

Counsel Ajith Pathirana appearing with Hasitha Perera, Madura Welgama, Rasika Samarawickrama and Thusitha Gunasena for DIG Gunawardena submitted that his client was experiencing an uncontrollable diabetic condition together with hypertension and heart attacks.

He emphasized that the suspect was a person who had conducted many raids and investigated many serious crimes that were committed in the past. Some of those suspects who are still in remand might harm the DIG and his life and limbs were anger. Therefore they requested to keep the DIG in Prison Hospital. (T. Farook Thajudeen)
