Police found the T-56 assault rifle today, that was used by the main suspect arrested in connection with the killing of a British tourist at Medilla, Tangalle early Sunday morning.
Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said that he had used the firearm at around 12 midnight to celebrate Christmas and had shot a few rounds into the air.
The main suspect, Tangalle Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman surrendered to the police Monday evening along with his driver. That same morning two others surrendered to the Tangalle police.
The CID took over the investigations last evening from the Tangalle police. Several broken bottles were found at the scene. The CID is now conducting investigations to arrest another ten suspects in connection with the incident.
Eyewitnesses said gun shots were also heard inside the hotel A Christmas party was taking place inside the hotel at the time of the incident, at around 1.30am.
The Russian girl who was with the victim had arrived in Sri Lanka last Saturday. She was taken to a private hospital in Colombo from the Karapitiya Hospital for further treatment. (Supun Dias)
