A stock of garments which were seized this morning by Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) was released after instructions came from ‘above’ ordering the officials to release it to the group of businessmen who had imported them.
A highly placed Customs official said that the officials who went from the Colombo Special Investigation Unit had taken the garments into custody and informed the businessmen that they could collect the items from the Customs office in Colombo after they had been inspected.
However, the businessmen had protested against the detention of the garments and contacted a few politicians who, in turn, had got in touch with high ranking Customs officials.
The Customs officials had subsequently released the goods after they were ordered to do so and not taken them to the office in Colombo.

The thing is if we take India this kind of goods can we protest? never? Indian officials even stop and question Sarukkhan and famous people in Indian after paying necessary tax. In SL there is a long standing problem. that these garments are brought by Indian poor people and handing over here for the last 25 years. Therfore immediately cannot be stopped, further, custom on duty are supportive of this businessman and they pay less normal amount. outside., and many people depend on this.
It is brought daily and sometime colombo special group go and seize them, Now Ramadaan period, there fore, Businessmen got angry and protest

48% of Sri Lankans are fools. They know nothing about economy or to anylise the situtation in Sri Lanka. They are prepared sell their valuable votes for packet of rice without knowing the consequences.

Our very own leather industry is suffering because of illegal shoe imports such as this. Behavior such as this is jeopardizing the jobs of 500+ employees as we too are looking at the cost benefit of importing vs manufacturing. If the government is serious about creating better manufacturing opportunities thus leading to greater exports, they will need to show some proper backbone with the customs department :(
