Ruhunu uni declared out of bounds

The Wellamadama Complex of the Ruhunu University was today declared out of bounds after a mob attack the students left eight of them injured.

The students -- who assembled at the Administration building on Monday night seeking safety after an unidentified gang had attacked several of them -- were notified by the university administration to vacate the premises by 1.00 p.m. yesterday after the Wellamadama Complex was declared out of bounds.

The Wellamadama Complex comprises four faculties -- Arts, Management, Science and Commerce with some 300 undergraduates attending them.

Students expressed concern over the sudden decision by the authorities and pointed out that instead of being provided security they were left vulnerable and at the mercy of unruly elements. The students blamed the university administration of throwing them into the streets at such short notice.

“A majority of the students are unable to go home because of the flood situation and can neither remain in the university. Despite our best efforts we were not allowed to meet the Vice Chancellor and voice our grievances,” Ruhunu University Students Union President Ashan Wijeyalath said.

The students accuse the university administration of having a hand in the assault and claim that the student’s lives are at grave risk. (Lakna Paranamanna, Krishan Jeewaka Jayaruk)
