The Government has spent as much as Rs.41 million to sustain 38 officials appointed as consultants to President Mahinda Rajapaksa on various subjects during the past three years, Parliament was informed today.
Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunwardene disclosed these figures in response to a question asked by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake who asked it for the second time.
Mr. Dissanayake said the government already spent a colossal amount of money to maintain the President’s personal staff including his coordinating secretaries.
“Is it then reasonable to spend another Rs.41 million for his consultants,” he asked.
Mr. Gunawardene said these consultants came in handy when executing government policy for the benefit of the benefit of the people. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)
