UNP MP Ranjan Ramanayake and Government MP A. H. M. Azwer were engaged in a heated argument in Parliament today over a comment made by Ramanayake who said the Sharia law practiced in Saudia Arabia was a barbaric one where Sri Lankan expatriates were killed mercilessly.
Mr. Ramanayake urged Foreign Employment Promotion Minister Dilan Perera to bring laws to ban Sri Lankan women from going for employment to the Middle East as housemaids. Mr. Ramanayake was referring to the statement made by Minister Perera, saying he would become popular if he went ahead with imposing a ban on women going for employment to Saudi Arabia. “Why don’t you do it and get popular and impose the ban so that you can save the Sri Lankan women from the barbaric Sharia law?”
UPFA MP A. H. M. Azwer who raised a point of order at that time said Mr. Ramanayake should not make hasty remarks on Sharia law as it was God’s law.
Meanwhile Minister Perera said Mr. Ramanayake had exposed his party’s views on Muslims through this statement. “The whole world will know the UNP’s attitude on the laws imposed in the Middle East,” he said.
He also said Sri Lankan women did not go to the Middle East as housemaids; they now went as Housekeeping Assistants with special training. (Yohan Perera)

this shows Hon.Azwers ignorance,he is mixing up the Sharia law of the Quran(revealed frm a Merciful God)th the sharia law practised as interpreted by the uncivilized Bedouin Arabs of the Arabian desert...their harsh interpretation(only applicable for poor South Asians and African,NOT to Europeans or North Americans)has nothing to do with Islam,...Mr.Azwer request you STOP associating the harsh and selective traditions of the Bedouin Arabs and calling it Islam...many Muslims especially in South Asia are victims of this ignorance and mix up...

before talking about saudi law, try to restore law and order in Sri Lanka. No body now talk about Welikada prisoner killing. at least saudi is kill according to their law, but in Sri Lanka its extrajudicial.

firstly, ALL SL housemaids do not suffer in the middle east. The government needs to implement a minimum wage level and proper training before send the maids. Rouge agencies and agencies that offer jobs to maids with broken promises (wages, employers who have a history of maids running away ect) should be black listed.
secondly for the maids who have ben successfully working for a number of years in the ME this is going to be a bad deal, who is going to provide for them once they are stopped by going to the ME? In many cases they are the only bread winners for their family.
The SL Embassies should be more active in looking after the maids who send so much back to SL.
Maids go the ME sacrificing everything for the betterment of their families. Look around and see how many families have benefited by people working in the ME. And yes for every good there is also a bad!!!!

one shot shud not mix up shariah law with saudi law , the beheading and punishment meted out for offences in saudi is saudy country law , NOT shariah law , one shud understand all aspects before pointing out . shariah law is the law derived by GOD Almighty thru revealation and nobody had the right to write down laws unlike living beings who write books since long the day they been educated to do so , once they die then somebody writes another law , this is not shariah law

Whatever they say, they will never stop them from going to the Middle East, as there is too much money to be made and lots of foreign exchange coming in to the country.

Do you'll remember the kid in your class who was more worried about how his hair looked rather than focus on the term exams? Ranjan is the kid who worried about his hair - doubt if this guy even has passed his O/Ls and yet people appoint him to govern the country - need we say more?
