Protest marches head towards Colombo
Two separate protest marches – one by the University lecturers and the other by the Inter University Students Federation are nearing Colombo causing heavy congestion along the Galle Road and the Baseline Road, our reporter said
The University lecturers are set to proceed to Hyde Park Corner Colombo, for the main rally on Friday evening.
FUTA spokesman Dr. Mahim Mendis said that unprecedented crowds had gathered along the roads to express support and solidarity for the concerns of the lecturers.
“Tens of Thousands of people have joined us. This kind of crowd, made up of people from various political parties, different ideologies, is unprecedented. They have gathered together to save the education sector,” he said.
The march is scheduled to proceed to Hyde Park through Kollupitiya junction
The Inter University Students Federation protest march which began from Kandy is now passing Dematagoda.
IUSF Convener Sanjeewa Bandara said the students will gather at the Lipton’s Circus for a massive demonstration, this evening. (Hafeel Farisz)
