Unauthorised cutouts, party offices to be removed

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has instructed Assistant Election Commissioners, stationed at electoral district level, to speed up the work on the removal of unauthorized political party offices and cutouts, officials said yesterday.

A political party is entitled to have a campaign office covering each polling district. There are as many as 12,021 polling districts in the 22 electoral districts. Besides, one main office can be set up at each electoral district.

An official of the Election Department said all unauthorized political party offices and cutouts would be removed. He said, in certain instances, political parties used abandoned buildings as their offices, merely for the display of cutouts.

“There is no one occupying these buildings to operate the campaign activities. They are used solely to display cutouts. Those are counted as unauthorized places,” he said. (Kelum Bandara)

Our money is used for all this work. Please amend the election law so that they will be punishable offences with fines and even imprisonment depending on offence or repeats. After all they the candidates should set the example of proper conduct at all times.

There are cutouts & posters in Colombo very specially of RAVI KARUNANAYAKE & ERAN WICKRAMARATNE and specially in Colombo North ... Modera & Mattakkuliya. The Police are silent and even the 119. What a shame MATTAKKULIYA CHURCH ROAD & KELANI GANGA MILLS ROAD JUNCTION Ravis office is there with a huge advertising cutout and this office is never opened. The Police are overlooking via DM Android App

Clean city, TV programs normal except the leaflets coming to the homes and Newspaper advertisements. There is no sight of general election is going on in Sri Lanka..

Unfortunately laws are made by these jokers who contest so they will not make these punishable offences - like the UPFA insisted on removal of the crossover clause in 19A to vote for whole bill. Election Commissioner must insist thru Constitutional Council.
