The United National Party (UNP) today charged that the Northern Provincial Council has overstepped it constitutional mandate by passing a resolution that called for an international investigation on Sri Lanka.
The resolution passed by the Northern Provincial Council calling for an international probe on the war in Sri Lanka is illegal as a provincial council has no power over international affairs, UNP MP President’s Counsel Wijedasa Rajapaksa said.
He told journalists today that the 13th Amendment to the Constitution does not provide provisions to pass resolutions calling for an international probe.
He said the central government has the power to dissolve the Council, but if such a decision is taken the call for a self- rule in the North could intensify.
Taking the government to task over the northern issue, Mr. Rajapakse said the present regime had invited the UN for a probe on alleged war crimes by agreeing to it in accordance with an MoU signed between the government and the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon. He recalled that the Darusaman committee was appointed by the UN following this agreement.
However, he said the UNP is prepared to support the government in overcoming whatever challenges it may have to face in Geneva in March if it acts genuinely without trying to take political advantage from it.(Yohan Perera & Ajith Siriwardana)

This is Sri Lanka......each politician/party has his own agenda for mileage but not for the good of the Country.

You are not a Sri Lankan but a Sinhalese. Hence, you took this view. When more than 100,000 were killed, would we be silent ? We Tamils world over will demand for an International inquiry.

Let the probe also investigate the TNA's connection with the LTTE and India's role in nurturing the tigers. They are responsible for more deaths than the Army.

I want to see SL government dissolve NPC. If that happens it will be end SL and birth Tamil Eelam. First Tamil Nation in the post modern era. 80 millions Tamils from around the will call Tamil Eelam their home. Sinhala nation watch out.
If MR dissolves NPC VP's prophecy will come to pass. You have to listen to VP's hero's days speech. VP said MR will deliver Tamil Eelam.
I personally believe this help Tamil Nadu to create their own Tamil Nation.
MR & SL government challenge you to dissolve NPC. Do you have intestinal fortitude?

The UNP has to first think of reviving the party before you look at the big picture. Concentrate on the Southern and Western province elections first.

So, it has taken a member of the opposition to come out with this piece of legal exposure. He may be called a traitor for this?

Best they can do, UNP is to pass a resolution in parliament condemning this act by tiger proxies & demand the abolition of provincial council system & join hands with Govt to fight against tiger backed US/UK war mongers led resolution against Sri Lanka to create an atmosphere to sow seeds of separatism as their economies are well oiled by tiger blood moneys for decades. If so only UNP can ever dream of toppling this Govt one day by winning the hearts & minds of innocent majority citizens who will regard UNP to be true patriots once again

Shameless comment. The NPC has passed this resolution bcos all the commissions under the present regime has been a hoax. It has been a sinhalese culture to harrass minorities which is an uncivilised barbaric activity in this new world. It is time the sinhalese are taught and punished for this shameless historical activity, for which their leaders think it is patriotic.

Good thinking, at least UNP realized now, Sri Lanka belongs to majority Sinhalese and UNP now thinking of the Sinhalese Nation not the party. First safe guard the Sri Lanka nation by hook or crook. Let the minority live and let live. Let them have money power and media power.

It's a good move if UNP actually support the government on this issue. But, I'm not sure who will try to get the political advantage from this with considering the history.
