New evidence on ‘White Flag’ incident - Sooka

New evidence has emerged on the contentious ‘white flag’ incident that cropped up during the final stage of the conflict, said Yasmin Sooka a human rights lawyer and former expert adviser on Sri Lanka to UN Secretary General.

She said the facts that had surfaced necessitated an independent international investigation.

Ms. Sooka who has also co-authored the April 2011 Panel of Experts report on Sri Lanka issuing a statement on the new evidence on the ‘white flag’ incident that has been released by the International Truth and Justice Project (ITJP) says the analysis of the facts points to an “organised government plan at the highest level not to accept the surrender of top civilian, administrative and police leadership of the LTTE, but rather to execute them” – a decision which she states is a grave violation of international humanitarian law.

The new report of the ITJP has presented a detailed account of the events that allegedly transpired on the final day of conflict and of the ‘white flag incident’ along with several new elements including SMS messages allegedly sent by then Sri Lanka Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona through a European intermediary to the LTTE briefing them on how to surrender, transcripts of alleged telephone conversations between the LTTE and top members of Sri Lankan Government negotiating the surrender and testimonies of four eye-witnesses to the surrender of two top LTTE political leaders.
