Missing persons: Several complainants blame LTTE

Most of the complaints made to the Presidential Commission Investigating into Complaints on missing persons in Batticaloa had held Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) responsible for the disappearances, the Commission said.

“Most of the complaints were against the LTTE. There weren’t any allegation against the security forces,” Commission Chairman Maxwell Paranagama said.

He said the Commission received 58 complaints from Batticaloa while 49 residents had come for the public sittings that took place at Batticaloa Divisional Secretariat today.

“Most of the complainants saidit was while their relatives had visited Kalmunai from Kattankudy to attend to business matters that they had gone missing.
They may been abducted by the LTTE or gone missing while returningfrom Kalmunai or on the way to the town,” Mr. Paranagama said.

“The public sittingswill continue in Batticaloa till Monday and the next session will take place in Mullaitivu,” he said.

The Commission had received about 18,000 complaints including 13,605 from civilians and 5,000 from Security Forces. (Lahiru Pothmulla)
