The intrusion of wild elephants in to human habitat was on the rise in the Kataragama, Buttala region, Wildlife officials said.

Recently a Cabinet Minister Vijith Vijayamuni de Zoysa was chased by wild elephants for about two km at Buttala, Kataragama. However the Minister had asked the driver to drive slowly to observe the activities and movements of the chasing elephants.

“There are about 25 to 30 wild elephants in the area,” a Wildlife Department official said.

He said that the public should desist from giving food to the elephants.

“When the people feed these elephants it disturbs the lifestyle of the elephants and they start frequenting the streets,” the official said.

Where do you expect wild elephants to go when humans have invaded and destroyed their habitats? What's worse, people have the audacity to accuse elephants (and other animals) of invading 'human habitats'! Give me a break!
