Sri Lankans will get the opportunity of viewing the first meteor shower in the New Year on Tuesday January 3 the Sri Lanka Astronomical Association said yesterday.

Senior Member of the Association Dr. Kawan Ratnatunga told the Daily Mirror that the shower would be visible shortly after midnight on Tuesday January 3 and early Wednesday morning.

This would be visible in the ‘great bear’ he said. The meteor shower which is named Quadrantids would be at its peak time would be seen in the wee hours on January 4 according to reports published by the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA).

Quadrantids originate from an asteroid called 2003EHI and it is believed that these are pieces of a comet which had broken apart several centauries ago. (Yohan Perera)

I have seen the 1998 one. It is a spectacular sight. Don’t miss out the chance. It would be worth getting up in the middle of the night to see it. Hope there wouldn't be any clouds tonight

Quoted from space.com, "While many meteor displays in 2011 were washed out by a bright moon, the Quadrantid meteor shower is expected to put on a spectacular light show, with no pesky moonlight to interfere. The peak of the Quadrantids will occur at around 2 a.m. EST (0700 GMT) on Jan. 4."
If the calculation of the date and time is correct, the peak time of the meteor shower will be past 12 midday in Sri Lanka...!!

What is "great bear" ? Is to the North?South?East?West or any other direction?

Great Bear is a constellation (group of stars) located in the Northeast sky. You can see the meteo shower just below the Great Bear after midnight on 4th.
