More than 100,000 letters in toilet pit

A large number of letters including airmail, ordinary letters, post cards and propaganda material of politicians who contested the recent general election were recovered from an abandoned toilet pit in the Moratuwa post office this morning.

Post Master General Rohana Abeyratne and several senior officials of the Postal Department and the police visited the scene on information from the public and recovered the stock of letters from the toilet pit. Moratuwa Chief UNP Organiser Deepal Rodrigo had also made a complaint to the Moratuwa police in this regard.

They said more than 100,000 letters had been dumped in the toilet pit and that a formal departmental inquiry into the incident would be held and action taken against those responsible. Moratuwa police are conducting a separate investigation. (Indika Manoj Cooray and Kusal Chamath)

Do not use Sri Lanka postal mailing sevices. Lot of thieving postmasters and post mistresses who just steal because they can. Stealing, cheating and lying are in Sri Lankan DNA.

This shows the pathetic standards of public administration. This would have never happened in the colonial days as discipline was very high along with respected and quality administrators.

95% of person working in state institutions have go their jobs through some form of influence. These state employees have become vote banks and also crowd banks for political meetings. This is the shame of a major portion of this countries population.

What a sorry state of affairs. These type of things must be going on in other government departments as well. It will take a herculean and tireless effort to get the public servants to do a little bit of HONEST work. Will our good governance pall bearers do a clean up job.

Whoever who are involved must be sacked and none of them ever given a government employment. I believe the postmaster has already been interdicted.
