Int’l community will be notified: Deputy Minister

The international community will be promptly notified of the measures adopted to ensure the safety of the residents in Southern Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the riots in Aluthgama and Beruwala, Deputy External Affairs Minister Neomal Perera said.

He said this when Daily Mirror asked him about the damage control being carried out by the Government in the wake of concerns expressed by various countries including US, Canada and by other international organisations including the UN and the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) with regard to Sunday’s violence in Aluthgama and Beruwala.

“We are responsible for the safety of every individual including foreigners residing in the affected areas,” the deputy minister said and assured that the international community would be kept informed about the details of the action being taken by the government to guarantee the safety of the citizens and ensure that similar incidents do not recur.

While US and Canada issued statements on Monday condemning the violence that erupted in Southern Sri Lanka following a rally held by Buddhist hardliners in the area, the OIC too expressed serious concern over the incidents urging the authorities to enforce the rule of law and investigate the incidents so that perpetrators could be brought to justice. The OIC is the second largest inter-governmental organisation after the UN with 57 member states spread over four continents.(Lakna Paranamanna)
