India and SL coast guards meet

NEW DELHI - The coast guards of India and Sri Lanka are holding a four-day meeting to discuss maritime issues amid allegations of attacks on Indian fishermen by the Sri lankan navy.

The visit is part of efforts by both governments to seek cooperation in maritime issues of mutual concern and to strengthen interactions between the two coast guards.

Press Trust of India reports the meeting was led by Sri Lanka Coast Guard chief Rear Admiral AARA Dias and Indian counterpart Vice Admiral MP Muralidharan.

A statement from the India's Defence Ministry said: "During the discussions, it was mutually agreed to strengthen cooperation in a collaborative approach in addressing a spectrum of maritime issues concerning safety and security."


The visit will provide a fresh impetus to existing ties between the two coast guards in view of maritime security situation in the region. (Source: Bernama)
