Singer Amal Perera, who was summoned to the police station to give a statement in connection with the missing albino turtle, said yesterday that he was innocent and that he had undergone much inconvenience due to this false allegation.

“I and my family including my school going daughter have undergone much inconvenience due to this incident. Chandrasiri who is the owner of the turtle hatchery must take the responsibility for making a false allegation against me. Chandrasiri said about 200 buyers came to buy the turtle but I do not know why he connected only me with this incident. Chandrasiri must also be questioned regarding the loss of the animal,” he said.

Convening a news conference in Colombo, Mr. Perera said he went to buy the albino turtle with one of his friends in July and said his friend wanted to buy it for Rs.35 million.

“I mediated in this deal only because both the buyer and the turtle owner were my close friends. I did not want to buy a turtle for such a big price. I am a person who earns my living by singing. It is true that my friend offered Rs. 35 million. But Chandrasiri refused to sell it. So we went away. But we never threatened him and we had not brought the money to buy it as he claimed. This incident happened in late July or early August as far as I can remember. I wonder why this Chandrasiri made this complaint after about four months”, Mr. Perera said. (Ajith Siriwardana)

Many years ago, we all could afford a coconut and did not have notorious local millionaires who would gamble millions away in a casino or turtle. We respected and followed our own religeons and did not have to plant statues nor blast loudspeakers to show that. Within a short time of few years, we are even accused internationally of some of the worst crimes against humanity. Isnt the reason for all this much clear? Even a criminal must realise that he needs to choose his leader who is not criminal, so that he can one day become a better man. That is where we in this country failed.

Agree with Anton. Perhaps this man was expecting a lot more and also has with a lots of money. Why could have secured the place more securely if this turtle is worth Rs40million. Police must investigate this owner and his assets.

Nothing surprising in a country where even wild elephants go missing and later found in private premises with the Minister in charge still looking for the registration book of elephants! All very conveniently done for the benefit of the corrupt politicians who seem to be thriving under this miserable setup. Sadly, people deserve the rulers they get anyway.
