Gem-mining in Kantale tank banned

National Gem and Jewellery Authority Director General Nimal Bandara said Police and Army teams have been deployed in the vicinity of the Kantale Tank to prevent villagers from damaging it in their rush to collect gems.

Mr. Bandara said any excavation or mining of the tank has been temporarily stopped as it could incur heavy damages to the tank.

More than 1000 people started hunting for gems on the bank of Kantale tank following rumours of several gems that are reported to have surfaced following the heavy rains several days ago.
