FUTA warns of token strike

University academics are urging the Government to appoint a high level committee to address undergraduate grievances and recommend apt solutions to their issues as one of their demands of the token strike planned for June 3.The Federation of University Teachers Association (FUTA) today warned they would proceed with the token strike as planned and indicated the possibility that this bring academic activities at universities countrywide to grinding halt.
The academics have presented six demands which they plan to highlight and bring to the attention of the authorities through the token strike. A mechanism inclusive of FUTA members through which students’ issues can be probed and solved has been highlighted by the academics as some of their demands.
“We also urge the Government to allow student unions to function and to stop the harassment of student activists,” FUTA President Dr. Chandraguptha Thenuwara told a media briefing today. (Lakna Paranamanna)
