A group of rehabilitated LTTE combatants will contest the August 17th General Elections as an independent group for the Jaffna District.
Initially they had sought nomination from the Tamil National Alliance(TNA). However, the TNA leadership had declined to give them nomination mainly on account of their violent past.
Consequently they had decided to participate in the elections as an independent group. Tamil journalist cum politician S. Vidyatharan who heads this list of candidates said he did not field any candidates to contest other districts in the North and the East due to their multi-ethnic character.(Kelum Bandara)

No surprises there. The best party for them to revive the eelam ideology is the TNA.

No problem - they have been rehabilitated by the previous govt. So they are equal to anyone now - still you see vigneswaran harping on tamil genocide.

As a Tamil and as one born in Jaffna, I feel it was a good move by the TNA to prevent these persons from joining their party to contest. Persons like these should not be allowed to congregate or concentrate together on political matters. It is too early and the scars are fresh. It would allow easy access for the "tiger diaspora" to make inroads into the governing of the North East and instil their Tamil extremist sentiments even more. This should be stopped at all costs. Wonder why the government is allowing this? I also wonder if MaRa has a hand in this?It would be a good way to disturb the balance and swing some extreme Sinhala votes in his favour. For arguments sake the only tiger person who could have been allowed to enter the political fray was Anton Balasingham. He was an educated, moderate thinking person with a journalistic background. His opinions were respected and considered by the SL government and the west as he was willing for a political solution than a military one.
As much as we must remember the LTTE for the havoc they caused, we also should not forget the carnage committed by a legally elected government on her own citizens.
