Trincomalee Magistrate U.L.A. Azhar today remanded the Eastern Provincial Council Deputy Chairman Ariyawathie Galappaththi till June 14 on charges of having threatened officials of the Trincomalee Magistrate’s court.

The Magistrate had told court that the incident would set a bad precedent if not dealt with immediately. The Court was informed that Ms. Galappaththi had threatened the officials and lawyers of the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court.

She surrendered to the police after a protest by lawyers and court staff.( Amadoru Amarajeewa)

Indeed good news. But only small fry from the backwoods are taken to task for this sort of thing. The big guys in the big cities get off Scott free for far major offenses. Why?

In the big cities it would be because the officials and lawyers invite politicians to threaten them, unlike in trincomalee. see the guy who tied himself not long time go.

Some thing is better than nothing. Hope, the same procedure will be adopted when politicos threaten not only officials of a Magistrate Court, it should be same when they threaten even minor staff, whereever, whenever.

All humans should have their dignity upheld as long as they do a legitimate and honest day's work.

At the same time, if the Magistrate Court's staff misbehave, they should be punished double - because they know the law.
