Drug dealers in P'ment: JHU urges Mangala to name names

The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) today urged UNP parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera to name and identify the parliamentarians who are involved in drug trafficking to protect the dignity of the Sri Lankan Parliament.

“For a long time now this drug problem has been prevailing in Sri Lanka. Even the police are unable to stop this due to the political security this trade is receiving. However now these political forces behind drugs are being exposed gradually. So since Samaraweera made a statement in parliament saying that many politicians representing the parliament are heavily involved in drug trafficking, speaker Chamal Rajapaksa has a duty to ask Samaraweera to reveal these drug businessmen to protect the dignity of the parliament while Samaraweera too has an obligation to name the culprits while acquitting the rest of the parliamentarians,” JHU Leader Ven. Omalpe Sobitha Thera told the Daily Mirror.

Ven.Sobitha Thera said all other parliamentarians should pressurize Samaraweera to name the drug dealers to acquit themselves of the allegation while stopping Sri Lanka from becoming a drug mafia.

“So far it is Prime Minister D.M Jayaratne who is at fault since he has not been proved innocent. Samaraweera is just trying to wash dirty linen of the Prime Minister. Nevertheless we believe that there is some truth in the second statement he made that many parliamentarians are involved in the drug trade. So we want him to name these people or otherwise the international community could think that the Sri Lankan parliament is filled with drug delaers,” Ven. Sobitha Thera said.

The Thera said if Samaarweera remained silent it would amount to he too being identified as a representative of the drug mafia for withholding vital details. (Jayashika Padmasiri)
