The Elections Department has asked Deputy Minister Weerakumara Dissanayake to vacate a government circuit bungalow occupied by him and a group of supporters.
He is said to have been using the bungalow to carry out election activities in the Anuradhapura district.
According to a complaint lodged at the Elections Department the deputy minister had been occupying the circuit bungalow belonging to the Building Materials Corporation in Anuradhapura. The BMC comes under the purview of Construction and Engineering Services Minister Wimal Weerawansa.
Mr. Dissanayake is also a member of Mr. Weerawansa’s National Freedom Front, (NFF) which is contesting the elections on the UPFA ticket.
A Elections Department official told Daily Mirror the Department had ordered the Deputy Minister to vacate the bungalow as soon as possible because the use of state resources for political work in the run-up to an election was illegal.
Also, the Department yesterday deployed 11 senior officials to Anuradhapura to look into complaints of election law violations in the area in the run up to the election, and submit a report.
The highest number of complaints about such violations has been received from Anuradhapura. (Kelum Bandara)
