Bar Association to file action against cops

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) is to stand up for the rights of the university students who were assaulted while in police custody and to file contempt of court action against police officials, including a senior DIG, over the arrests and assaults.

“We intend to file action against the police for contempt of court,” BASL President, Upul Jayasuriya who heads over 14,000 of the country’s legal fraternity told Daily Mirror. The Bar president said that the police had wrongfully arrested a group of university students on an alleged court order and had assaulted them.

“The police have taken cover under an order which was not there,” Mr. Jayasuriya said.

“Instead of taking instructions from the law books and the judiciary, the police are taking the dictates of politicians,” he complained.

“The police must act according to the law and not according to what the politician dictate to them,” he added.

The BASL president complained that the police had acted on the orders of Senior Deputy Inspector General Anura Senanayake who is allegedly acting on political orders. Mr. Jayasuriya said the DIG who is two years past retiring age is kept there to act according to the whims and fancies of politicians.  (Susitha R. Fernando)
