Measures have to be taken to stop character assignations carried out on certain websites by those who want to fulfill their own private agendas, Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told Parliament today.
The Minister made this point in response to a question raised by UNP MPs at an adjournment motion today on whether the government would ban websites.
Mr. Rambukwella said that the government would take the steps necessary to suppress the efforts of websites that have become obstacles to a decent society. He invited UNP members to join him for a dialogue with regard to the matter.
“The adjournment motion which you move today will boomerang on you as your character could also be assassinated by some of these websites,” the Minister said. This triggered uproar with members of both sides slinging mud at each other while talking of illicit love affairs.
UNP MP Tissa Attanayake, who moved the adjournment motion, wanted to know why certain websites only had been banned despite their being legally registered sites.
UNP MP Ajith Perera, who joined the discussion, charged that web sites were to be banned by the government with the objective of winning a future presidential election by preventing the flow of information towards the public.
MP Mangala Samaraweera, giving his opinion, said that he could not blame Minister Rambukwella for this ban and harassment of web site offices as it is the other powerful persons in the government that were behind these acts.
