I think he was drunk. Americans are known to have suicide thoughts when they are drunk. Better check if he has been drinking possibly the whole day. For this reason many U.S. hotels do not have windows without some sort of drill.

Suicidal thoughts come not because u are an american it comes if you are highly depressed (Depression is seldom noticed) OR due to prescription drugs, after administering when not properly followed up (which is now growing in the word)
