Video: All Party Showdown

United National Party (UNP) is to join several other opposition political parties, trade unions and leftist parties of both sides for a grand showdown against the proposed new procedures with regard to pension gratuity scheme in Colombo on June 24.

UNP National Leader and Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe today assured some trade union members who were organising the protest that his party would participate in it on June 24.

Mr. Wickremesinghe said his party had called for a debate in Parliament on the issue on June 18 and further assured that arrangements would be made for the trade union members to meet the UNP MPs who were going to participate in the debate.

He said the adjournment debate would be moved by UNP Hambantota District MP Sajith Premadasa.

The Leader of Opposition said long term measures would be needed to stop the government from slashing the benefits enjoyed by the public servants.
“Just holding a protest alone would not stop the government and we need to think beyond that,” he said.

Also he said the benefits enjoyed by the public servants were slashed following the directions of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and declared that a future UNP government would terminate all engagements with the IMF.

Health Services Trade Union Alliance Secretary Saman Ratnapriya who explained its stand to the UNP National Leader said they expect proper cooperation from the UNP for the protest.

He said the unions were even ready for a general strike.

The Union Leader further said they would meet all opposition political parties and every leftist political party in the country to get their support for the protest.
UNP Chairman Kabir Hashim and General Secretary Tissa Attanayake also participated in the meeting. (Yohan Perera and Sanath Desmond)
