Youth killed in Police shooting at checkpoint in Jaffna

Colombo, Feb. 10 (Daily Mirror) - A 17-year-old boy was killed in a police shooting after officers opened fire on a van that allegedly failed to stop at a checkpoint in Jaffna early this morning, police said.

The incident occurred near the Allapiddy junction in the Kayts police division. Police said officers had signaled a suspicious van to stop, but the vehicle ignored orders and sped toward the Mandaitivu area.

According to police, details of the fleeing van were relayed to a police jeep carrying the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Kayts Police. Officers attempted to intercept the vehicle, but it continued to evade repeated orders to stop.

Police said officers initially fired warning shots into the air. When the van failed to halt, police opened fire at the vehicle in an attempt to stop it. The driver was injured in gunfire and was rushed to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The deceased was identified as a 17-year-old resident of the Vaddukoddai area.

Police also said the rear number plate of the van had been removed. Two other individuals who were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident were taken into custody.

Further investigations are being carried out by the Kayts Police and the Jaffna Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit, police said. Pix by Thevatharsan Sukinthan
