Young businessman arrested over fatal accident involving Defender Jeep in Kiriella

A 24-year-old businessman has been arrested by the Kiriella Police for reckless driving after a Defender jeep he had been driving collided with a car and a motorcycle, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to five others in Kiriella last night.

According to the police, the incident occurred when the Defender jeep, travelling from Panadura towards Ratnapura, attempted to overtake a vehicle and collided with a car and a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction at Idangoda in Kiriella.

The driver of the Defender jeep, the car driver, his wife, their 3-year-old child and the motorcycle driver and his wife sustained injuries in the accident. They were rushed to Kiriella Hospital, where the 35-year-old motorcycle rider succumbed to his injuries. The other injured individuals have been transferred to the Ratnapura Hospital for further treatment.

At the time of the accident, four persons had been travelling in the Defender jeep, police said.

The driver of the jeep has been taken into custody and is currently receiving treatment at the Ratnapura Hospital.

Investigations have revealed that he is a businessman from Poruwandanda in Horana.

The Kiriella Police are conducting further investigations into the incident. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

How many bud drivers drive in a similar manner intimidating and threatning law abiding drivers? How many of them tailgate vehicles and keep blowing ther horns incessantly thinking that everyone else has to clear the raod for them to speed on on the road. They may have observed how the motocades of so many of our politicians travel on the road. Why on earth the police cannot take action when it is such a common occurance to other users of the road beggers belief. How many more avoidable tragedies like this are they waiting for?

If it is a businessman, must be connected to some stinking politician. So, the accident is legal and therefore it has to be closed. The verdict- It is illegal to drive the car and motorcycle so the defender and the driver will be released. SL will never prosper when we have a backboneless leaders who are corrupt.
