Following the derailment of Yal Devi intercity express train, the Railway Department has decided to cancel the both the nightmail trains on the northern line today.

They said the night mail trains between Colombo Fort and Kankesanturai today have been cancelled.

It was reported that the Yal Devi express train derailed between Vavuniya and Medawachchiya stations this afternoon around 1.30 pm.

The trains on the Northern line have came to a standstill with this derailment.

The locomotive and two adjoining compartments were derailed, causing extensive damage to the railway track, the department said.

Repairs to the track is in progress, the railway department said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

For the last few months people have been criticising of the poor Indian engineering in relation to the rail tracks laid by them. Now suddenly and mysteriously there are derailments in quick successions on tracks not laid by the Indians. And this current derailment has occurred just 20 miles from where the Indians began to lay tracks towards Jaffna. Police have to investigate.

Very sad. Tracks looks very old with wooden block (it's a very old tech). Ministers, Learn from China and other countries. Track is coveted with grass, i have never seen like that.

From the above photos it appears that the track has not been maintained as required. Old sleepers, weeds on the track not removed or killed by weedicide allowing to grow reduce the life span of the sleepers. Who will answer the lapses?

when you don't inspect regularly and maintain even German system would fail. The problem of the workforce, get pay, get O?T by hook or by Crook and don't do a cent worth of work!! That is the reason for this derailment> The ballasting has crumbled?? How could train travel in the circumstances!! First get facts straight and right!!

Rotten sleepers...... Is that some of the rotten timbers sent from Australia in the early 2000's? That deal got swept under the carpet. Doesn't say much for the maintenance department.

Check out the quality of sleepers!!! Even a 5 year old could tell that there's no way those sleepers could handle the weight of latest powerful heavy engines such as M10 and M11. Where have the Sri Lankan civil engineers studied? What have they really learned?
