World Cup Matchweek 2: Qualification Race Heats Up

June.19 (Mirror Sports) - The opening matchweek of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is complete, and the race for places in the newly expanded Round of 32 is already heating up. With 12 group winners, 12 runners-up and the eight best third-placed teams advancing, every point could prove crucial.

FIFA Official Group Tiebreakers

Should teams finish level on points at the conclusion of the group stage, FIFA applies a three-step process to separate them:

Step 1 (Head-to-Head): Greatest number of points, superior goal difference and most goals scored in matches between the teams concerned.

Step 2 (Overall Group Record): Superior goal difference and most goals scored in all group matches, followed by the fair-play score.

Step 3 (Final Decider): Position in the latest official FIFA Men's World Ranking.

What Is at Stake: Group-by-Group Scenarios

Groups A & B: Mexico and South Korea lead Group A with three points apiece and meet on Friday, with the winner guaranteed a place in the Round of 32. Group B remains completely deadlocked, with all four teams sitting on one point, meaning no side can qualify or be eliminated just yet.

Groups C & D: Scotland can book their place in the Round of 32 with a victory over Morocco on Friday. Meanwhile, the USA can secure qualification by defeating Australia in Seattle. Türkiye and Paraguay both risk early elimination if they suffer a second straight defeat.

Groups E & F: Germany are riding high after a resounding 7-1 thrashing of Curaçao, and a victory over Ivory Coast would send them through. In Group F, Sweden can seal a knockout berth by beating the Netherlands on Saturday.

Groups G & H: Both groups opened with draws across the board, meaning no team can officially qualify or be eliminated during Matchweek 2.

Groups I & J: France and Norway have straightforward paths to the knockout stage—win their Matchweek 2 fixtures and they are through. In Group J, Argentina and Austria both have three points and meet in Arlington with a place in the Round of 32 on the line.

Groups K & L: Colombia can secure progression by defeating DR Congo, while Portugal will look to bounce back after a surprise opening draw. In Group L, England and Ghana face a huge showdown on Tuesday, with the winner guaranteed a place in the Round of 32.
