Work together to eliminate egg shortage in country: Ministry

All stakeholders in the poultry industry should work together to eliminate the shortage of eggs, Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said in a meeting held yesterday at the Ministry Office.

During the meeting, all participants agreed to work together until the shortage issue was resolved.

Representatives of the Poultry Owners' Association, Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry, Agriculture Ministry, Livestock Development State Ministry, Animal Production and Health Department, and officials of the Sri Lanka Customs participated in the meeting.

According to the members of the industry, Sri Lanka needs 7 million eggs per day. The local egg production now stands at 5.2 million per day, resulting in a shortfall of about 1.4 million.

“By the end of this year, with the increase in local egg production, there will be no need to import eggs,” an official said.

The participants agreed to start working on the issues with immediate effect. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
