Wild tusker ‘Bhathiya’ succumbs to injuries

Colombo, July 15 (Daily Mirror) - The wild tusker known as ‘Bhathiya’, who had been under intensive veterinary care following serious injuries, died this morning despite days of continued treatment.

Bhathiya, a well-known elephant in the Nikaweratiya Wildlife Zone, was found critically injured after falling into an irrigation well. The fall further aggravated complications from an earlier gunshot wound.

I don't understand why this elephant wasn't taken out of water. They treated it in water itself, which is a good medium for germs.

This is the what finally happened. The Srilankan wildlife department is fully responsible. We spent so much taxpayers money for the this particular department and just wasting our money and country's valued resources. Mr.Prisdend take immediate action please.

Very very sad on the loss of yet another majestic elephant. The trauma was excessive on the elephant due to the attempt to shift its position and the scale of the wounds, and when he was already very weak. The result was inevitable. Curative health care for humans is so abysmal in our country, so one can imagine our ability towards animal-care. The answer is not 'curative' but 'preventive' - Authorities must apprehend and severely punish the persons who shoot to kill animals!

Rest peacefully dear one. This country is full of animal abusers and sadists who thrive here, with no repercussions. This is a cursed country. Look at the sad plight of our dogs and elephants. Better to be in a peaceful place that the hell it is here. Rest easy once again.
