Colombo, January 8 (Daily Mirror) - A Technical Officer attached to the Welisara Sub-Office of the Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha, who is alleged to have solicited and accepted a bribe of Rs. 50,000 to approve a building plan while overlooking its deficiencies, was remanded till 23 January by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today.
The order was made when the suspect was produced before court by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
According to the Commission, the suspect was arrested following a raid conducted based on a complaint made by a resident of the Ragama area.
CIABOC informed court that the suspect had pointed out deficiencies in a building plan relating to a building located in Welisara belonging to the complainant and thereafter demanded the said sum to approve the plan despite those shortcomings.
The suspect was arrested yesterday at the Welisara Sub-Office of the Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha while accepting the bribe.
Investigating officers requested court to further remand the suspect, stating that additional investigations are to be carried out in connection with the incident.
After considering the facts presented, the Magistrate ordered that the suspect be remanded till the 23rd.
