Water tariff to be increased by 30 percent

Water tariff is to be increased from at least 30 to 40 percent from today, the National Water Supply and Drainage Board ( NWSDB) announced yesterday.

The gazette notification was expected to be issued at the time this report went to press.

NWSDB assured that low-income families will not be affected by the hike. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

From at least 30% to 40%. What is the upper limit? It will be sky high. Wait and see what this 30% really is. Most of these state institutions are very weak in their arithmetic, notably, the Ceylon Electricity Board, the Railways Department and of course the National Water Supply and Drainage Board.

Instead if cutting down expenses at water board and ceb the burden is passed to people. Nice solutions given by imf jokers. Income of people are either same or less with less buying power and now pay more bills too. Still we have not started paying any loans back and guess the situation when that starts.

Release the increased tariff with details. Any increase at the moment is totally unfair without eliminating colossal corruption over decades. Corruption connected with several engineering and IT projects has to be investigated and suspend the tariff increase going through the legal process.

Good idea to improve the ailing economy. Everyone should drink at least 3 litter water. People should drink less water and suffer from kidney troubles. In the absence of proper treatment in government hospitals, they will end up in mal salawa.

@Sharmila. You sound like one of those who are used to hand drawing posters! Don’t make daft comments here, go write such comments on a board and hang it during some protest. Even if 5 in a family drinks 3 liter a day it’s less than half a unit of water. People waste water so much(because it’s cheap) - especially those low income people. Some think piped water just falls from the sky for free. Those living in cities should be sent to rural areas to show what pain they pay to access water- in cities it just flows through pipes- so who cares!

It is everyone's responsibility to cooperate with the government including MPs in this difficult situation. They should eat less in the parliament canteen. Temporarily, they should stop wearing immaculate white clothes and coat and suit, including the president. They should wear span clothes until 2048. So no need to waste too much water
