The police have filed charges against at least 41,000 persons who were arrested on charges of failure to wear face masks and maintain social distancing upto date since last year.
Police Spokesman SDIG Ajith Rohana said that a total number of 49,449 persons were arrested for not wearing face masks and failure to maintain social distance in public since October 20 last year.
They were charged under the provisions of Quarantine and Prevention or Diseases Ordinance and to the relevant provisions of the Penal Code.
He said the court could impose six months regorous imprisonment or Rs. 10,000 fine or both the punishments if anyone found guilty on the charges.
The spokesman said the police have already filed cases in courts against at least 41,000 persons and are in the process of filing cases against the remaining persons as the courts have resumed functioning.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
