Violating quarantine laws: Over 41,000 charged, police to file 8,500 more cases in courts

The police have filed charges against at least 41,000 persons who were arrested on charges of failure to wear face masks and maintain social distancing upto date since last year.

Police Spokesman SDIG Ajith Rohana said that a total number of 49,449 persons were arrested for not wearing face masks and failure to maintain social distance in public since October 20 last year.

They were charged under the provisions of Quarantine and Prevention or Diseases Ordinance and to the relevant provisions of the Penal Code.

He said the court could impose six months regorous imprisonment or Rs. 10,000 fine or both the punishments if anyone found guilty on the charges.

The spokesman said the police have already filed cases in courts against at least 41,000 persons and are in the process of filing cases against the remaining persons as the courts have resumed functioning.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

How many of those VIP "goons and tugs" who live on taxpayer money have you been fined for breaking the quarantine laws? Wasn’t this country supposed to be one law for everyone? Don´t you know that the role of the police is to enforce the law and order? This applies to all people, regardless of their background and status. In reality, however, we see the law of the jungle prevailing in this country.

Even if the law and order is imposed on the offenders, fined and jailed, if the culprit is needed in the society for political reasons, he will get the pardon and become a free man again.
