Vijitha Herath ends minister’s list for overseas employment

Colombo, Nov 15. (Daily Mirror) - Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath has announced that the Minister’s list will no longer be used to send workers abroad, highlighting the urgent need to retain talent in Sri Lanka.

Addressing an event at Temple Trees, he said the Foreign Employment Bureau is being digitized to monitor its officers more effectively, as the outflow of workers threatens the domestic economy.

“Right now, 78% of those going abroad are skilled workers,” he warned. “We cannot afford to lose them. This year could bring record foreign exchange earnings, but only if we act now to keep our workforce at home.”

The minister stressed the government’s urgent goal: reduce labor migration, expand the domestic economy, and create more jobs locally to prevent further loss of skilled workers.
