Very happy if BASL issues statement on Wijeyadasa or his son: Chathuranga

Colombo, July 27 (Daily Mirror) - Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe said he would be "very happy" to see the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) issue a statement regarding former Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe or his son, questioning whether the association applies the same standards in all cases.

Whike speaking to the media, Abeysinghe said such a move would help determine whether the BASL was acting independently or protecting a particular group.

"We will see whether this is genuine or whether these actions are being taken to protect one particular class," he said.

Abeysinghe also confirmed that the Government intends to bring Constitutional amendments to increase the retirement age of judges.

He said a Constitutional amendment would be required for changes affecting the judiciary, while other reforms could be introduced at Ministerial level.
