Vavuniya birthday party arson and murder suspects handed over to CID

Five suspects were arrested over the incident of setting fire to a house at Thonikkal in Vavuniya while a birthday party was in progress, where a couple was burnt to death and several others injured last week.

Vavuniya police and Vavuniya Division Crimes Investigation Unit launched investigations to arrest the suspects after a group of men set fire to the house on July 24.

A young couple was killed and nine others including children were injured and hospitalised in the incident.

Investigations revealed that a group of masked persons had come and set fire to the house due to a personal dispute while the owner was holding a party for his daughter's birthday.

The suspects, aged between 24 and 33 and residents of Vavuniya were arrested along with three motorcycles used for the incident.

Meanwhile, the IGP ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to take over the investigations into the incident.

Accordingly, the arrested suspects were handed over to the CID for further investigation.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

In the Middle Eastern countries deterrent punishment is meted to criminals of this nature by openly implementing the Firing Squad where the Public can witness which ensures non recurrence of criminal activities by other criminals. In Sri Lanka we observe that criminal activities are on the increase. Our govt should also look into this type of pinishment very seriously.

You sound like a true religious person and stuck in the barbaric Middle Ages. This is why for example secular Europe and Australia are democratically developed countries and Middle East and most religious countries are dictatorships. Not a lot of crimes like this in Australia, Europe neither.

A video circulated on a Jaffna news media showing the dead guy attacking a young man for not paying his loan taken from a loan shark. So the guy was in fact not a innocent human that was randomly targetted. Not that I condone the violence but stating there is more to the story than reported here. ANd yes SOuth Indian cinema and corrupt police in north sows the seeds for these henious crimes.
