Use pipe-borne water sparingly as dry weather continues: Water Board

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has informed the public to use pipe water sparingly due to the prevailing dry weather conditions.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, the NWSDB said the average water consumption of people had increased drastically due to the dry weather.

They said there has been a drastic decrease in the water levels of the catchment areas due to not receiving sufficient rain.

They said due to insufficient water levels at the intake, the water purification and supply could become low.

The Water Board requests the public to limit the use of purified tap water for activities like washing cars, gardening, swimming pool maintenance etc. Due to the low pressure the water supply to higher-lying areas may be disrupted. Therefore, people are requested to collect water and use it sparingly.

The NWSDB said the situation may improve if the catchment areas receive rain.

They also said certain areas may receive water at low pressure. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Doctors are saying to bathe children twice a day for 20 minutes at a time. Cooking and washing of clothes daily have to be done. If there are a minimum of 7 in a family, including parents and grandparents, how can we use water sparingly!!! With the increase of water tariffs at a time when people are undergoing immeasurable economic hardships, it's hard to understand what more the authorities are expecting from the people. It's a constant shout of "don't waste this, don't waste that" in households these days and this has such a negative impact, mostly on children!

In Nuwara Eliya there is so much water from the mountains and from rain that there should always be enough water for all purposes. But it is not, which is due to the extremely poor water management, the incompetence of the responsible authorities and politicians. Why weren't caverns built into the mountains with large underground reservoirs? Why are there no rain catchment devices? All this is common in the Mediterranean countries, especially on the islands, which use it to bridge dry periods that last for months. Why is there no advice for houseowners on how to collect and store rainwater? Every time it rains, I look at the overflowing waterfall. Most of the water then ends up unused in a polluted river.

The spin doctors are at it again.The farmers were provided with water.As a collective punishment all must use less water and pay higher water bill.Start with the water board staff check if they are following the rules.What garbage is this with so many rivers in the country we should be able to export water.

It is sad to say that Lankans, waste water and power indiscriminately. Purification of drinking water is very costly. In Australia and UK we are very conscious of water usage. It is recommended that every house has a rainwater tank, use drip irrigation system with a timer, for the garden watering, use hoses sparingly for car washing, bath time 4 minutes, these are some water saving tips.
