Urgent relief measures for Cyclone Ditwah victims discussed in Mullaittivu



Colombo, Dec. 23 (Daily Mirror) - Urgent issues faced by residents displaced and affected by Cyclone Ditwah in the Mullaittivu district were reviewed at a special disaster committee meeting held yesterday at the Mullaittivu District Secretariat.

The meeting of the Mullaittivu District Coordination Committee was chaired by Deputy Minister of Cooperative Development Upali Samarasinghe and held under the patronage of Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Ananda Wijepala. The special session was convened on the instructions of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to accelerate relief and recovery efforts for affected communities.

Attention was drawn to the need for the rapid restoration of damaged infrastructure, including collapsed roads and bridges, the provision of compensation to the farming community, and the progress of distributing financial assistance of Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 25,000 to displaced families.

Ministers instructed officials to expedite compensation payments, complete reconstruction work without delay, and facilitate the cultivation of lands that are currently usable. Officials were also directed to identify suitable locations for the construction of permanent housing for displaced Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim families engaged in the fishing industry and to provide the necessary equipment to help them resume fishing activities.

In parallel with the meeting, compensation payments were distributed to farmers whose agricultural lands were damaged by the cyclone under the patronage of the ministers.
