Uproar as Govt. refuses debate on US$2.5Mn cyber theft

Colombo, April 28 (Daily Mirror) - The US $ 2,5 million theft had made the partly leaders' meeting yesterday stormy with the opposition calling for a debate on the issue, and the ruling party rejecting it.

Chief Opposition Whip Gayantha Karunathilleka said the request was made for a one-day debate on the $ 2.5 million threat during the next parliamentary week, which is set to begin on May 5, but the ruling party refused it over and over again.

“We called for a debate many times at yesterday’s meeting, but the government kept on rejecting our request. We stressed that Parliament is bound by the duty of discussing the issue as the legislature holds power over public finances. However, our request was turned down over and over again,” the MP said.

He said the government did not give a valid reason for the refusal.

“We then decided to initiate a dialogue with all opposition parties representing Parliament to decide on the next course of action,” he added.

Secretary to the Leader of the House Janakantha De Silva, said the ruling party could not agree to the opposition's request as there were important government businesses to be taken up next week.

Meanwhile, the Parliament Committee on Public Finance (COPF) is expected to meet today to decide on asking Treasury Secretary Harshana Suriyapperuma to appear before the committee. Committee Chairman Harsha de Silva said he intends discussing the issue with the committee members and decide on it.
