Upcountry line back on track after overnight repairs

Colombo, June 12 (Daily Mirror) - Train services on the Upcountry Line, which were disrupted on Tuesday due to the sudden appearance of a sinkhole between Peradeniya and Kandy, have been fully restored following overnight repair work, the Railways Department said.

According to officials, continuous heavy rainfall over the past two days in the Kandy area caused a section of the railway line between the Kandy and Peradeniya stations to subside, halting train services on the busy Upcountry route.

Railways Department crews worked through the night to repair the affected section and resume operations. Following the successful restoration, the first train from Colombo Fort to Badulla safely arrived at Kandy Railway Station at 5:55 a.m. today.

In the wake of the disruption, train services were temporarily limited to Peradeniya Railway Station. Parcel transport services on both the Kandy and Matale lines were also suspended as a safety precaution. The Railways Department, in coordination with local authorities, arranged bus services to transport affected commuters between Peradeniya and Kandy.

Railways Department officials thanked passengers for their patience and cooperation during the disruption and confirmed that regular services on the Upcountry Line have now resumed.
