The Supreme Court has been directed that university hostels be checked at night to prevent incidents of ragging in hostels, Higher Education State Minister Suren Raghavan said.

He told the media yesterday that a total of 168,000 students have finished enrolling at all state universities around the country.

He said the decision was taken due to the information received that harassment is more common in the hostels between 12 p.m. and 5 a.m.

With the implementation of the programme, there is a clear reduction of harassment activities, the state minister said.

The decision was announced by the Supreme Court over the incident of the Sri Jayawardenepura University (Management Faculty) student who suffered near-fatal injuries during a party organised for first-year students on March 5, 2020.

Earlier, the Supreme Court directed the Sri Jayewardenepura University Vice Chancellor to submit a report on the action taken against senior students who ragged first-year students, including a petitioner who suffered near-fatal injuries three years ago. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)

Special campus police units like in foreign universities should be set up

Good move but who will do this? Why not provide individual therapy sessions to those students who are obsessed with ragging to treat their mental disorders. These are not the type of people who could be controlled with stick.

Ragging even takes place outside the universities in private boarding houses. How will they prevent such incidents ? It’s only deterrent punishment, such as dismissal from the university, no entitlement for state jobs that will deter.

Nab them, arrest them and sentence them for ragging. The minimum punishment even if not severe ragging ought to be 2-3 years RI. This is the best lesson the govt can give the other miscreants to be. Such graduates are not necessary for the society. After completing the term must be rehabilitated to become worthy citizens and not join trouble creating political parties. If any new entrants succumb to the ragging, then the parties involved for this death ought to be given death sentence and ensure it is executed.

Have separate hostels for first year students and prohibit senior students to visit the hostels Also start for first years two weeks before senior students

Start from the inception and put a stop to the "Prefectship" in schools first. The perfects' mentality is pathetic to say the least!! They abuse their "power" to the maximum. The principals and teachers are afraid of them. They would not speak a word against a prefect!! The younger students are mortally scared of the perfects and will do ANYTHING that a prefect would ask them to do! This is the "training" they get at school level and they continue it to university level and start ragging! So pathetic are most of our systems in schools!!!!!

First you better check your own Potuwa rotters (Mp's/ ministers) raping the poor village girls paying them a lump sum. There were three such incidents in the south.

Sorry sir If I am wrong.surely male and female sleeping areas must be having separate main doors for access. It should be padlocked say after 10 pm and opened in the morning according to yr regulated times (hope toilet facilities are available) This sounds a little rude can exoeriment.

Day-by-day, highly qualified academics are leaving the country. Students are now deprived of both bursaries and Mahaploa. It is so sad to see the current living conditions of the majority of the students. Some students are even visiting us and asking for money just to have their meals. If there are raggers, they must be punished, rehabilitated, or kicked out of the system. But what is currently happening is that these cunning politicians are making a fuss about raging to cover up the deteriorating situation of the public university system.

All good things start with a bang like a new broom which sweeps well made of coconut fibre and with time the fibre starts to wear out and even new ideas start to be fogotten with time. Whilst checking every night is good which is not a practical approach. Instill student discipline from the first year onwards and students violating should be penalized with no interference from politicians or Unions.

    Sack those who are ragging.

A future new government elected will stop all these checks! Because the current government is trying to suppress the activities of the state university students (who will run the country in the future) they will decide whom to rag and whom to not rag! Victory to the next ‘Subversive’ govt! ( @Sam Silva- note the ‘ sarcasm’ in this comment)

if freshers begin their semester 2 weeks before the seniors, they will get the opportunity to familiarise with the campus and form their own solidarity groups. this will prevent ragging to a ceratin extent.

LOOK LIKE A PRISON GUARD, IF YOU DON'T KNOW. LOOK AROUND THE WORLD JAPAN EROP. HOW IT HANDLE THIS MATTER?

We were stripped naked and asked to jump up and down in a separate boarding house. I can still hear the sounds of dangles. The seniors who did such, as well as the active members in the student unions are now top ranked officials at the government departments. One such person is a famous tall minister in circular glasses and white garb.
